Good morning, Mommy! Alright, sister, what are you going to do to make today memorable? What are you going to do that’s a little silly, a little fun, a little unexpected? This is your life we’re talking about! Let’s do something yummy today.
You have three days here – what do you want your kids to remember about this weekend? What can you do to feed your soul and bring your family closer together?
How about a fort in the living room? Or set up a tent in the front yard? Or pile everyone in the car and go to an honest-to-God campsite! Some of my favorite memories are of nighttime in a tent, my sleeping children piled all around me like so many puppies. Listening to the crickets, the wind in the trees and their even breathing was just a joy-drug. I feel lighter now just conjuring up the memory.
Or take them to a museum. Give them little pads and colored pencils or crayons and let them sit on a bench and copy a paining. They’ll feel so chic and grown-up. I did this with my daughter and she loved it. As it turns out, her goal is now to own her own graphic design business; never know what you’ll be turning on in those young brains of theirs.
Make something from scratch in the kitchen! Even if it’s as simple as ants-on-a-log, let the kids help you construct it. There is something visceral and powerful about cooking and eating. Especially if you bring your homemade treat into the fort you just made and eat it while reading books out loud together.
Go visit Grandma. Find a waterfall. Go to a park and rent a pedal-powered surrey. Hike to the highest point nearby. Find an indoor rock-climbing center. Play a family game of Nerf football. Have a tea party! If your kiddos are a little older you can go to an antique store and get individual cups and saucers for cheap. Let the kids each pick one and come back home and make like Downton Abbey.
Find an ethnic restaurant and introduce the kids to some new cuisine. Jewish deli (the reubens!), Thai (coconut soup!), Ethiopian (we get to eat with our fingers?!), French (croissant and chocolate, what?), Swedish (pickled herring, just try it), East African (samosa!)… the choices are nearly endless.
Whatever you do, girl, HAVE FUN TODAY.
Make it a day you’ll love to look back on.
