Helped them into a tree, helped them out of the tree. Sat on the grass and watched them scooter around the cul-de-sac. Carefully evaluated skinned knees and elbows. Watched them play basketball and congratulated them on their three pointers. Threw a tennis ball for the delighted dog. Gave piggyback rides.
It was an awesome night.
Fast forward about ten hours – here I am at 5:00 AM doing the dishes I didn’t do last night. And I am smiling.
See, life will never be done. Never. Never, ever, ever. There is no one out there doing it perfectly whose standards you have to live up to. Nobody else’s house is clean either.
If you get a chance to play, Mamma, play. You don’t know what is coming down that road. I do know, for sure, that, over the course of your life, something will come, and when it does, whatever it is, you want memories to fall back on.
Dishes at 5:00 AM aren’t bad at all when you have a night-full of laughter to re-live.
